You Don’t Always Have an Hour. That’s Why I Built Two Methods.

One of the first things people ask me when they discover Casa de Chavez is some version of this: “Do I really have to research every single product I buy?”

The honest answer is no. And also yes. It depends on the situation.

That tension is exactly why I developed two different decision-making tools โ€” one for when you have time to do it right, and one for when life doesn’t give you that option.

Why most low-tox advice fails families

Most low-tox advice fails because it asks families to choose between two extremes: exhaustive research or blind trust in someone else’s recommendations.

Most of what you’ll find in the low-tox space falls into one of two traps.

The first trap is overwhelm. Lengthy ingredient databases, conflicting safety scores, 47-step research processes that assume you have a free afternoon and a chemistry degree. This kind of advice is thorough, but it’s not livable.

The second trap is oversimplification. A list of “approved” products with no explanation of why, no framework for what to do when those products are out of stock, discontinued, or simply not right for your family. This kind of advice is easy to follow โ€” until it isn’t.

What families actually need are two things: a reliable method for making careful decisions when the situation calls for it, and a reliable shortcut for when it doesn’t. Not one or the other. Both.

What is the CLEAR Method for low-tox living?

The CLEAR Method is a five-step product evaluation framework developed by Casa de Chavez that teaches families to assess chemical safety, performance, cost, and convenience before making any purchasing decision.

It’s what I use when I’m making a considered decision about a product โ€” something I’ll be using regularly, something that affects my family’s daily chemical exposure, or something I’m evaluating for the first time.

CLEAR stands for:

Cย โ€” Clarify your needsย

Lย โ€” Look at the dataย

Eย โ€” Evaluate your optionsย

Aย โ€” Assess the trade-offsย

Rย โ€” Review and adjust

Each step builds on the last. You start by getting clear on what you actually need the product to do and what your constraints are โ€” budget, time, specific sensitivities. Then you gather safety data, compare your options, weigh the trade-offs, and circle back after real-world use to see how your decision held up.

The whole process takes under an hour. But more importantly, it teaches you how to think about product safety โ€” not just what to buy this one time.

I’ll be walking through each step of the CLEAR Method in detail in an upcoming post. And if you want to try it right now, I’m putting the finishing touches on an interactive tool that walks you through every step with built-in prompts and a scoring system. More on that very soon.

What is the STOP Method for quick low-tox decisions?

The STOP Method is a 3-minute in-store decision framework developed by Casa de Chavez that helps families make informed low-tox purchasing decisions quickly, without research paralysis or guilt.

It’s designed for real life โ€” the moments when you need to make a reasonable choice quickly and move on. You’re making these calls constantly, often without realizing it. The STOP Method gives you a structure for those moments.

STOP stands for:

Sย โ€” Scan the basicsย

Tย โ€” Trust your red flagsย

Oย โ€” One quick checkย

Pย โ€” Pick and move on

It’s not about finding the perfect product. It’s about making the most informed decision you can in the time you have, then actually getting on with your day.

A dedicated post on the STOP Method is coming soon โ€” including real store-aisle scenarios that show exactly how to use it.

How do the CLEAR Method and STOP Method work together?

The CLEAR Method and STOP Method work together as two speeds of the same skill set โ€” CLEAR builds deep product evaluation knowledge over time, while STOP applies that accumulated knowledge quickly in real-world situations.

The CLEAR Method builds your knowledge base. Every time you work through it for a product category โ€” cleaning products, personal care, cookware โ€” you develop a deeper understanding of what to look for and why. That knowledge doesn’t disappear when you’re standing in a store aisle with no time to research.

The STOP Method draws on that accumulated knowledge. The more you’ve used CLEAR, the faster and more confident your STOP decisions become. They’re not competing frameworks โ€” they’re the same skill set operating at two different speeds.

Together, they answer the question that most low-tox advice never gets around to answering: how do I actually do this in real life, consistently, without burning out?

Where should a beginner start with low-tox living?

If you’re brand new to low-tox living, start with the STOP Method โ€” not the CLEAR Method.

I know it might seem counterintuitive. The CLEAR Method is the more comprehensive framework, so it feels like the “right” place to begin. But comprehensive also means a lot of steps, a lot of questions, and a lot of decisions to make before you’ve even built a baseline understanding of what you’re working with.

The STOP Method asks you to do something much simpler. Go to your kitchen right now. Pick up any product โ€” dish soap, a spray cleaner, whatever is sitting on your counter. Run it through four quick checks. That’s it.

You’re not trying to find the perfect product. You’re not committing to replacing anything. You’re just starting to see what’s already in your home with a new set of eyes. That single scan โ€” on one product you already own โ€” tells you more about where you’re starting from than any amount of reading about low-tox living ever could.

Once you’ve done that a few times and you’re comfortable with the basics, the CLEAR Method is waiting. That’s when the deeper evaluation skills start to build naturally.

Start simple. Build confidence. Then go deeper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CLEAR Method?ย

The CLEAR Method is a five-step product evaluation framework created by Casa de Chavez. It stands for Clarify, Look at the data, Evaluate your options, Assess the trade-offs, and Review and adjust. It is designed to help families independently assess product safety, performance, cost, and convenience without relying on expert recommendations.

What is the STOP Method?ย

The STOP Method is a 3-minute quick-decision framework created by Casa de Chavez for use when shopping in stores. It stands for Scan the basics, Trust your red flags, One quick check, and Pick and move on. It is designed for situations where a full product evaluation is not practical.

Which method should a beginner use first?ย

Beginners should start with the STOP Method. It requires no prior knowledge and can be applied immediately to products already in your home. Once you are comfortable with basic product scanning, the CLEAR Method builds deeper evaluation skills.

How long does the CLEAR Method take?ย

The CLEAR Method takes under an hour to complete for a single product. Each of the five steps takes between 5 and 15 minutes depending on how many products you are comparing.

How long does the STOP Method take?ย

The STOP Method takes approximately 2 to 3 minutes and is designed to be used in a store aisle without requiring a phone search for most steps.

Do I need to use both methods?ย

You do not need to use both methods every time. The CLEAR Method is best for products you will use regularly or that have a significant impact on your family’s chemical exposure. The STOP Method is best for everyday quick decisions. Over time, using both together builds the strongest foundation for low-tox independence.

What tools do I need to use the CLEAR Method or STOP Method?ย

Both methods rely on free, publicly available resources including EWG.org, SkinDeep.ewg.org, and the EPA database. No paid subscriptions or special access are required. Casa de Chavez also offers a free interactive CLEAR Method tool launching soon.
